“It is a given that, individually and collectively, we think our world into being. The question is: How do we choose to go about it? Do we passively assemble our narratives from a cultural smorgasbord? Or do we test the recipes of others in our own kitchens? Do we take responsibility for some small portion of the world as we create it? My experience is that steering a proactive course – making the effort to think for oneself – has been the wellspring of a good life.”
– Peter Korn, Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman
Welcome to my test kitchen.
This blog is where I try out ideas related to my life. Posts may spring from thoughts I have while going for a pre-dawn swim, writing an essay, playing fiddle, hosting a pandemic cocktail hour with friends over Zoom, sea kayaking off the coast of Maine, cross country or telemark skiing, checking out new (to me) musicians, training for a marathon, exploring my family’s history, reading, renovating my 1847 house, knitting, deepening my yoga practice, cycling back roads, hiking with my coonhound, volunteering, or working with my nonprofit clients.
